Comment by the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the series of terrorist attacks in the Republic of Iraq
On the 15 September, there was a series of large terrorist attacks in several Iraqi cities. More than 50 people died and more than a hundred were injured. The majority of the victims were civilians. The terrorists used mined cars for their subversions. The largest-scale attacks were organised in Al Hillah and Basrah mostly populated by Shiites.
Moscow is seriously concerned about the continuing violence in Iraq, which has acquired an evident multireligious nature. We extend our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the dead, and wish a speedy recovery to all the injured. We condemn all terrorist sorties decisively and support the efforts of the Iraqi authorities to counteract the threats coming from extremists.
The growing coordination of terrorist and extremist actions in Iraq, Syria and other countries in the region are worthy of note. We think that the insistent attempts to rouse an interreligious conflict in the Middle East must be stopped.
We do not see other ways to overcome internal political and interreligious disagreements in Iraq, other than by way of an inclusive national dialogue, taking into consideration the interests of all segments of Iraqi society. Such an approach will also allow the mobilisation and consolidation of the efforts of all the Iraqis to effectively counteract the terrorist threat.
