MFA Spokesman Andrei Nesterenko Response to Media Query Regarding Signing of Kyrgyz-US Agreement to Create a Center of Transit Shipments at Bishkek’s Manas Airport
Question: How could you comment upon the signing by Kyrgyzstan and the United States of an accord to set up a Center of Transit Shipments at Bishkek’s Manas airport?
Answer: June 22 saw the signing of an agreement between the Kyrgyz and US governments to use Bishkek’s Manas airport as a Center of Transit Shipments.
The conclusion of that accord is, of course, a sovereign right of the Kyrgyz Republic. Speaking of the transit of NATO’s non-lethal military supplies for a counterterrorist operation in Afghanistan, as we know both Russia and the neighbors of Kyrgyzstan in the region have given consent to it.
As to the US airbase at Manas, the Kyrgyz leadership has repeatedly said the February decision to close this military facility is final and irrevocable. Obviously this is exactly where to proceed from.
